Lewis Acidic Ionic Liquids
Until very recently, the term Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) was nearly synonymous with halometallate ILs, with a strong focus on chloroaluminate(III) systems. The first part of this review covers the historical context in which these were developed, speciation of a range of halometallate ionic liquids, attempts to quantify their Lewis acidity, and selected recent applications: in industrial ...
متن کاملIonicity and proton transfer in protic ionic liquids.
Proton transfer in protic ionic liquids is poorly understood. Some acid/base proton transfer reactions do not proceed to the extent that is expected from Delta pK(a)(aq) data from aqueous solutions, yet some do. In this work we have investigated protic ionic liquids obtained by proton transfer from a common acid, acetic acid, to a range of amine bases of similar pK(a)(aq) values. Probe indicato...
متن کاملEsterification of carboxylate-based ionic liquids with alkyl halides.
A facile reaction of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIm]Ac) with dichloromethane at room temperature was observed with esters among the products. This esterification can be exploited for mild solvent-free esterification with a range of other carboxylate-based ionic liquids and alkyl halides.
متن کاملCatalytic reactions in ionic liquids.
The chemical industry is under considerable pressure to replace many of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are currently used as solvents in organic synthesis. The toxic and/or hazardous properties of many solvents, notably chlorinated hydrocarbons, combined with serious environmental issues, such as atmospheric emissions and contamination of aqueous effluents is making their use prohib...
متن کاملEsterification in ionic liquids: the influence of solvent basicity.
The second-order rate constant (k2) for the esterification of methoxyacetic acid with benzyl alcohol is reported in a range of ionic and molecular solvents. The solvent effects on esterification rate are examined by using a linear solvation energy relationship based on the Kamlet-Taft solvent scales (alpha, beta, and pi*). It is shown that the hydrogen bond basicity of the solvent is the domina...
